DON’T WAIT FOR AN EMERGENCY TO PLAN AHEAD!

Who would pay your bills if you or a loved one were suddenly hospitalized tomorrow?
You woke up in the morning, and thought it was going to be an ordinary day. Imagine unexpectedly being hospitalized and unable to manage your finances. Who would pay your mortgage, utilities, and other bills? Could your spouse access financial accounts held only in your name?
Here's something every family should know: Being a spouse, child, or other family member does not automatically give someone the legal authority to access or manage your financial accounts.
Without the proper paperwork, families may face frozen accounts, missed payments, or even a costly court process during an already difficult time.

Now your family is having to figure these things out. Calling a Notary from the care facility to have a power of attorney notarized. At least they “hope” that the power of attorney can get notarized because it is needed right away.
As a Notary, part of my job is to check if the signer is aware and alert; knowing what they are signing and if they are voluntarily signing the document. On more occasions than I would care to count, having to leave without notarizing the requested document because the signer was not aware and alert for the signing.
Encourage your loved ones, 18 years of age or older to have an estate planning document in place just in case for an unexpected hospitalization.
Yes, talking to parents with young “adult” children, whether they are still at home, or away at college. Having a legal document in place to assist in taking care of their bills, finances, being able to speak with the hospital doctors and staff.
It is always recommended that you seek an attorney, financial advisor, paralegal, or another professional educated in this area. There are also cost effective DIY methods available online. A Notary Public cannot provide this advice.
The goal? Give yourself and your loved ones greater peace of mind so the focus can remain on what matters most at that moment: your health and your family. ❤️
